Questions of a musical nature
Shannon mentioned me over at her site, when answering these questions … I’ve never done one before so why not eh?
Total amount of music files on your computer:
3912
The last CD you bought was:
Augie March - Moo, you bloody choir
What is the song you last listened to before reading this message?
Some “The Cure” song, I’m not really a fan, i think it was “Friday I’m in Love”. Funnily enough it was a guy named Marcel who was playing it too.
Write down 5 songs you often listen to (at the moment) or that mean a lot to you (at the moment):
In no particular order;
Gold Lion - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Stranger Strange - Augie March
Stained Glass Eye - Elliott Smith
Chicago - Sufjan Stevens
Evening On The Ground (Lilith’s Song) - Iron & Wine
Who are you going to pass this stick to? (4 persons) and why?
Mainly because I think I only know four “bloggers”:
- Clint
- Lee
- Orangepoweredwristwatch (you could do it here as a comment)
- Algy (you too could do it here as a comment. Go on, you know you want to.)
Anyone else? (Will & Live you both should) if you read this and feel like telling me about what you are listening to, do it. I like listening to recommendations.

Noticed Jess was listenising to Mazzy Star’s Among my Xun last week.
A classic 90’s girl’s album in my opinion. ( im seeing a 90’s vision of girls in floral dresses, heavy boots, panda-eye mascara and crudely cut hair- i think there’s beer somewhere there too. Oh no here comes Winona)
retro-Visions aside, “Roseblood” from that album is a fav. song of mine, almost up there with “Fruits of my Labour”.

While Im at the word-smithy, bashing out shiny epitaphs for you office boys;
Things I Noticed:
There is definiately a telephone ringing in the background of Led Zep’s “the Ocean” - it must be a blooper??!! its not percussion, and its not a sound effect ( like Pink Floyd or whatever would do)
was Rob’s mum calling him?
In Sophia Coppola’s Marie Anoinette, there is a weird scene where the queen is being serenaded by a group of 4 anonymous men- 2 on guitar, others silent. I didnt realise, its “French Band” Phoenix- and they kind of fumble the guitar playing a bit too- its pretty funny.

“I looked the other day…” and strange as it may seem, it seems to be on both Love Is Hell and Rock n Roll…at least in ITunes’ opinion.
“French band” Phoenix…still makes me laugh

Headphones: the great Revelators.
yes there are things one will hear that were previously drowned out by the massive bass-ness of your super-baad home stereo unit, if you start listening thru hedfones.
Eg, I NEVER noticed the hilarious bongo in the Beatle’s Your Gonna Lose That Girl. Its pretty wonky and random- Spazmodic…
And what the dickens is Dolby? every time i go to the movies you get this huge block-rocking promo for “DOLBY”

Never owned a fully sic sub woofer mate but I agree, headphones do reveal some hidden gems on occasions…I recall particularly an Erykah Badu track (no, not track 5!!) where she repeats a vocal refrain 4 times, and on the last it is double tracked. Stereo smoothness! that is only revealed with the headphones

Well kids, the intangible quality that has come to be known simply as “Dolby” -cant really be described with words. That’s why you wont find it in a dictionary.
You see kids,’ “Dolby” is like a blue bird in the distance, you cant touch it… or hold it tight, but its there just the same, making things turn out right.’
We at Dolby, felt the best way to visually convey the essence of Dolby was with various footages of gallaxies, and whatnot , swirling around a Logo-Monolith that is translucent yet metallic ( yeah i know, cool huh) ascending into space.
In the doldrums? try Dolby™

Found New Moon (Elliott Smith) on my ipod the other day - managed to have forgotten to listen to it (oops!).
5 or 6 songs on it among my all time favourites of his, including Talking to Mary, Placeholder, Going Nowhere, Almost Over

yeah, ‘going nowhere’ is a goodie. One of my all timers as well.
I’ve rediscovered my love affair with ‘radiohead’. As it seems the rest of the world has as well. ‘In Rainbows’ is really good.
I’ve seen some pretty funny conspiracy theory stuff as well.
Apparently if you take ‘OK computer’ and ‘In Rainbows’ and make a playlist with alternating tracks it all matches up seamlessly. The end of one track finishes the other etc. Which sounds very compelling until they qualify it with “oh, and set it to a 10 second crossfade”.
10 SECONDS!?
Basically ANY song by ANY artist sounds good with ANY song ANY artist on a 10 second cross fade. You can’t even hear the end or the start of the songs, it blends them together, that’s what the crossfade is for! “shuffling”!
People are such idiots. Especially ‘radiohead’ fans.

A good point well made…I do, however, recall a particularly seamless cross fading of Everyday People into that St Germain John Lee Hooker song by a certain non-professional DJ…those particular songs did seem to mesh together quite well

I’ll only be impressed if it took less than 3 seconds … anything more than that is just silly.
