Questions of a musical nature
Shannon mentioned me over at her site, when answering these questions … I’ve never done one before so why not eh?
Total amount of music files on your computer:
3912
The last CD you bought was:
Augie March - Moo, you bloody choir
What is the song you last listened to before reading this message?
Some “The Cure” song, I’m not really a fan, i think it was “Friday I’m in Love”. Funnily enough it was a guy named Marcel who was playing it too.
Write down 5 songs you often listen to (at the moment) or that mean a lot to you (at the moment):
In no particular order;
Gold Lion - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Stranger Strange - Augie March
Stained Glass Eye - Elliott Smith
Chicago - Sufjan Stevens
Evening On The Ground (Lilith’s Song) - Iron & Wine
Who are you going to pass this stick to? (4 persons) and why?
Mainly because I think I only know four “bloggers”:
- Clint
- Lee
- Orangepoweredwristwatch (you could do it here as a comment)
- Algy (you too could do it here as a comment. Go on, you know you want to.)
Anyone else? (Will & Live you both should) if you read this and feel like telling me about what you are listening to, do it. I like listening to recommendations.

Self-righteous song(s)…
Romulus - Sufjan Stevens
Certainly critical…I guess criticism doesn’t automatically equal self-righteousness, but here goes:
re his Mum :
“We saw her once last fall.
Our grandpa died in a hospital gown.
She didn’t seem to care.
She smoked in her room and colored her hair.
I was ashamed, I was ashamed of her”

I could perhaps recount an instance of anti-sprezzatura…
I recall an instance in the distant past when yours truly was playing piano in the Royal South Street Competitions (i.e. the Ballarat Eisteddfodd). I was playing a Bach prelude, which had a continuous driving rhythm, which meant that if you stemmed the flow at all and broke the continuity, it was very hard to restart and get back on track. Which of course was what happened…I kept stopping and restarting and finally stumbled my way through it. Despite my fervent wishes, the stage didn’t open and swallow me.
If sprezzatura is seeming effortlessness, with the effort hidden from view…well, if I may use an architectural analogy, this experience was all exposed beams and crumbling flying buttresses!

On the topic of self-righteous songs …
Here is the mother of all of them, “I know there’s an answer” by the Beach Boys. It’s on the Pet Sounds album which has a distinctly self-righteous feeling overall in my opinion.
Anyway, it’s home to such gems as;

I would suggest, with some interest in the topic, that the term “anti-Sprezzatura ” might in fact denote an attempt to make something that IS otherwise Easy, Dumb or Lame-O, appear to be Difficult, Virtuoso or Worthy…
(a fairly common pursuit in this world, wouldnt you agree?)
possibly we could nomenclate (is that a word?) Skip’s recounted episode as having a SANS-SPREZZATURA vibe;
“Spretsaturus Nullus”; Asprezzatura; or in the modern vernacular……..”oops”

I have a couple of self-righteous songs, but I’m not sure if they are perhaps just trying to be Heart-felt:
Sting - Russians:
“Mr. Reagan says we will protect you
I don’t subscribe to this point of view
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too”
Madonna - Sky fits heaven:
“Hand fits giving so do it
That’s what the Gospel said to me
Life fits living so let your judgments go
That’s how our future should be”
and I can’t think of any specific egs but I’m sure every second song by U2 is self-righteous.
