Questions of a musical nature
Shannon mentioned me over at her site, when answering these questions … I’ve never done one before so why not eh?
Total amount of music files on your computer:

The last CD you bought was:
Augie March - Moo, you bloody choir
What is the song you last listened to before reading this message?
Some “The Cure” song, I’m not really a fan, i think it was “Friday I’m in Love”. Funnily enough it was a guy named Marcel who was playing it too.
Write down 5 songs you often listen to (at the moment) or that mean a lot to you (at the moment):
In no particular order;
Gold Lion - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Stranger Strange - Augie March
Stained Glass Eye - Elliott Smith
Chicago - Sufjan Stevens
Evening On The Ground (Lilith’s Song) - Iron & Wine
Who are you going to pass this stick to? (4 persons) and why?
Mainly because I think I only know four “bloggers”:
- Clint
- Lee
- Orangepoweredwristwatch (you could do it here as a comment)
- Algy (you too could do it here as a comment. Go on, you know you want to.)
Anyone else? (Will & Live you both should) if you read this and feel like telling me about what you are listening to, do it. I like listening to recommendations.

I am rockin′on:
*(Love Is Like A )Heatwave- Martha and the Vandelas. such face-melting soul!!
*Uptown- Prince. Ridiculous posturing and lyrics plus wierd synths divided by the square root of virtuoso guitar equals…. keep your body hottttt!
***Keep love as your Golden Rule-HAL. sweet harmonies…top album
*Copper Kettle- Bob Dylan. from his hated “self-portrait” album. Embodies my aesthetic. so good. ( I pause to sigh and reflect) few chords, strings, rural imagery….tears.. I sing it to baby Esmé and she sleeps. So “Snuggery”
*Night Birds-Ryan Adams. go on, let him in to your heart.(also Call me on your way back home)
*The Sun Aint Gonna Shine (Anymore)- Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons — whoa this is awesome!
*here she comes again- The Stands, SO UNDER-RATED
that′ll do for now

midnight juggernauts - secrets of the universe
this lovely stringed mj track
sonic youth - rather ripped

sufjan stevens - illinois
i think you would really enjoy sufjan very “up your alley”

yes, jesse, sufjan very up your alley, I think- give it a try.
no…. I still cant down-load your songs… they will play, although I didnt wait for the whole thing to load. Why dont you just make me an album? the old way. (go on….)
Charles:I heard Mightnight Juggernauts play a set on jjj ( my radio cred just went down in front of an international audience) including Rock lobster (b-52’s) and the tom-tom club’s song that Mariah’s ‘Fantasy’ is based on. Excellent choises from those boys. I know that Rock lobster is camp and gimmicky- but it sure has some burning riffs in it!!!Better than Dead kennedys. Actually their whole first album is excelent. pity about their 90’s demise into fizz-pop…

Sufjan Stevens eh? That doesn’t sound like something I’d say.

I gotta say I prefer Beyoncé. But having thought about it, it really does have nothing to do with music. Beyoncé seems to have more credibility. Why this is I don’t know. She really has nothing above Mariah in that sense (Jay-z?? would a “Pepsi Can” really make up for all of his musical sins? I don’t think so). At least Tony Mollotta didn’t collaborate with her at any point, in a vocal format.
here is a playlist to make you feel great:
No Confidence Man - Elliott Smith
Trouble (Cat Stevens Cover) - Elliott Smith
Stained Glass Eye - Elliott Smith
Twilight - Elliott Smith
There There - Radiohead
Call Me On Your Way Back Home - Ryan Adams
Come Pick Me Up - Ryan Adams
Plainclothes Man - Heatmiser
The Lord God Bird - Sufjan Stevens
Mistress - Sufjan Stevens
Undertaker - M. Ward
I’ll Be Yr Bird - M. Ward
Heartbeats - José González
Evening On The Ground (Lilith’s Song) - Iron & Wine

Currently listening to:
If I Ever Feel Better - Phoenix
All the qualities you’d expect from French pop
Fruits of my labour - Lucinda Williams
Beautiful atmospheric country
Prototype - Outkast
Slow funk with great sense of fun (“I wanna say stank you - smelly much”)
Elizabeth you were born to play that part - Ryan Adams
Longest song name in history, but beautiful stuff from Ryan. Love the way that he walks that fine line between tender emotion and schmaltz, and only occasionally overbalances
Music For a Large Ensemble - Steve Reich
Not quite a song (15 mins), but surprisingly unclassical in its approach. Have to listen to it with your techno hat on (listen for the slight changes that sustain the interest)

Hello Jesse. May I first take this opportunity to thank you for inviting me to take part in your chain quiz. It was very kind.
Here follow my answers.
Total amount of music files on your computer:
I currently have 238 files on my computer, this is because I have recently backed up my library and tend to play data dvd’s quite often. I hope this explanation helps.
The last CD you bought was:
Archie Bronson Outfit - Derdang Derdang
I quite like it.
What is the song you last listened to before reading this message?
On the radio right now is a lovely tune called You Got It by the amazing band known as Mudhoney. And how’s that for a bit of good luck, this tune actually does quite sincerely rock and it reminds me of being a wee child at the indie discos of my youth. Ah. Such sweetness.
Write down 5 songs you often listen to (at the moment) or that mean a lot to you (at the moment):
Bromheads Jacket - When you wasn’t Famous.
The first tune for some time that I could actually listen to twice running. And infinitely better than the Streets original.
John Cooper Clarke - Evidently Chickentown
Well, all of this album really (Snap, Crackle & Bop) and this is the first track, and it’s great. See, it even reduces my mini review to that of a 5 year old.
Jarvis Cocker & Kid Loco - I Just came to tell you that I’m going
From the Monsieur Gainsbourg revisited album. It too is great.
Wolf Parade - You Are a Runner and I Am My Father’s Son
This is exceptionally good, they’ve been likened to the Arcade Fire, but I even like them better than that. And certainly they better than those shitty Clap your hands say yeah guys.
Camille - La Douleur
Because it’s French.
Who are you going to pass this stick to? (4 persons) and why?
I’m not going to pass this one, that’s ridiculous. I loathe chain things that turn up on the internet, and while it was mildly entertaining to fill in this questionnaire it’s certainly not something that I would consider endorsing. I mean, Jeez, I have enough original content of my own to fill a blog without resorting to things like this.
No offence like.

Jay-Z did Heartbreaker with Mariah way before he hooked up w “B”, I believe.
Yes , theres the APPARENT credibility thing, but, they BOTH have terrible dress sense- And, M did hang out with ODB, who, apart from collecting welfare cheques in a limosine, was credible in a hip-hop sense, surely.
Heartwarming to be join’d by Skipthefirsthalf.
I’m proposing that we record a cover of Bob Dylan’s Alberta or Copper kettle. Together.
This weeks CRaZy window-cleaning mixx includes:
-Physical- Olivia Newton-John
(whaaaaat??!!! “there’s nothing left to talk about, unless its horizontally…”) yes I quite enjoy the verse parts.
-Beats To The Rhyme- RUN DMC
they werent saying anything profound, but its great oldskool.
-I Dont Mind- Buzzcocks
70s pop-punk and better than the strokes.
The Mighty Boosh (thanks Jess and Liv)

I’m mostly listening to a lot of my hubby’s hand-me-downs, and some of Jesse’s hand-me-downs.
But I’m craving a bit of moody ‘80’s stuff (or 80’s-esq)
So far I’ve only gathered together:
definitive breaks - phoenix
more than this - roxy music
i’ve seen that face before - grace jones
she makes my day - robert palmer (this is more for nostalgia)
anymore suggestions anyone? there has to be saxophones and synth and smoky moodiness. think emmanuelle seigner in ‘frantic’.
I also really like ‘the truth’ and ‘I’ve been thinking’ by handsome boy modelling school.
Ezzy currently loves “a spot over here, and a spot over there, a spot on your ear and a spot in your hair”.
re the mariah/beyoncé debate I’m erring towards M, not just in loyalty to my husband, but B takes herself too seriously. M goes berzerk with her voice and that’s good. B’s thighs are better but M’s yo-yoing weight makes her more real.
btw apparently JayZ and B got married recently in a secret ceremony.
that’s it for me.

I can’t help myself… I have to comment because I’ve been thinking a lot about particular lines from songs lately. How you can listen to a song and there will be this one random line that you just fall in love with and it makes you listen to that song time and time and time and time again.
At the moment my no.1 is:
Tori Amos - Toast
” I raise a glass, Make a toast, A toast in your honor, I hear you laugh
And beg me not to dance”
And
Tori Amos - The power of orange knickers
“That’s the power of orange knickers, under my petty coat”
I mean who the flip could introduce that above line into a song and make it sounds so great. No one except Tori she is wonderful. And Damien Rice’s voice is great too.
Um also…
I’m with Bernard Fanning too…
“Wish I knew which buttons to push, then I’d know how to please you, sad but true” - that sweet, ha ha ha, don’t we all.
And that’s it. Oh Jesse do you know our highschool is having a reunion in Sep. I’m not going but maybe you and liv will. Lovely.

Smooth Operator (Sade)?
Careless Whisper (George Michael)?
(Well, they’ve got saxopones!?!)
PS I’d be delighted to accept Rustic Butter’s kind offer of a Bob Dylan cover. And nice work on the Mighty Boosh - I agree, shallow Spanishness just doesn’t cut it.

Was recently given Valereen Hoop, by the Color Kids
the Latest (?) offering from Melbourne raconteur C. Kikuchi, under the new moniker ‘Color Kids’.
no, this isnt a review… not familiar enuf yet.
Unfortunately an unlisted cd was all I was given so I cant refer to track names. He certainly is prolific! Its probably time for a greatest hits album- which would be firstclass.
Some introspective lyrical content, is it revealling of whats REALLY going on in C’s mind?… although, as he admits in song, its easier to make feelings up (“how is that appealling?”).
This mix of auto-biography, fiction, and sort of thinking-out -loud lyric reminds me of the enigmatic 19th C. author George Borrow, who embellished his already adventurous biography, to a point where the story is truely teetering on the lip b/w believable/unbelievable — - a wobbling wheel that I quite enjoy.
(whoaaaaa one way, whoaaaa the other…)
apparently the title is dutch and means forlorn hope.
He prefaced this explanation of Valereen Hoop, with “no its not a girl”.
Funny, there is an imaginary guitarist in the Boosh named
‘Cathy Rindhoops’ (also not a girl).
The first track is very good.

It is an interesting thing having the most recent comments on top … I find it quite confusing and it doesn’t read as well (for me).
I’ll take advice on it though. What do the readers think?
I’ve been trotting out Sigur Rós. Also Thom York’s solo album and Martha Wainwright. Not sure yet what I think on all counts, interesting though.

I think B does take herself a bit to seriously.
She’d be a clear winner though if she released an album of remixes that ditched ALL of the collaborations.
– jesse
6:05 pm
I initially agreed with Rustic Band-Aid’s suggestion, but having seen new comments at the top, I think that the eye has to jump around a bit too much, and the flow of banter becomes disjointed - back with the old way, I say!

I believe, Skip, shes single…
This week on the platter:
Aberfeldy:’ Love is an Arrow’
Cute stuff, but slightly miffed that my own little song “the Arrow misses the Bird” has a similar lyric “fear is an arrow, a shiny black arrow.”
( I may submit a list of Archery-themed songs soon)
My Morning Jacket; ‘Wordless chorus’
im a fan of these hard-to-pin guys.
The Platters: ‘Crying in the chapel”
Love, love, love this song, but really would prefer the Oriole’s version. NOT the Elvis one either.
Doo-wop/gospel is transcendant.
Jesse “Stevens” : ‘Drama Queen’
well, jess, Ive been singing it in the kitchen, curse you, it must be catchy. Actually its very good- esp the chimy background chord — you know the one.
Nicolai Dunger: Return of love
Jamie- you ought to like this fellow, Norweigan, bluesey country, he’s great.
– sticky tape band-aid
11:00 pm
Well, im back. cant think of a more entertaining wepside. (blocked nose)
Archery songs: a megre, measly effort,
Cupid, draw back your bow- Sam Cooke
poison arrow-Abc
Oo-de-lally -Disney's Robin Hood
love is an arrow- Aberfeldy
William Tell overture- Rossini
Broken Arrow- Neil Young
– sticky tape band-aid
11:09 pm
whoa! Maybe just delete it! I cant take it back
(clearly im not a TRUE moderator)
What is your opinion on the chord progression
G-C-Am-D7? ( um, i think thats it)
Its that ubiquitous doo-wop one… which can sound corny, but also beautiful with vocal harmonies etc,( ronettes-Be my baby)
I suspect is has a strange musical power…
– sticky tape band-aid
3:54 pm
Thanks Jess for the comment -postioning-adjustment.
Thank you too, Rustic, for your recommendation re Martha, but I fear that she’s only dwelling on the fringes of the congregation
G-C-Am-D7 (and its close relative G-Em-Am-D7) are certainly work horses of Western Music. Big Mac would refer to these progressions as “lollipop”, I guess as they are the structures for sweetly melodic music, that is so harmony-friendly
– skipthefirsthalf
4:28 pm
Well, Skipper,
how does Big Mac ‘feel about the Flat 5 chord, because im a guitarist too…’ (howard moon- out-takes) ;D
…work horses eatting lollipops!
What about Lucinda Williams, could we do a cover of Over time or Fruits of… ? except how woud we change the lyric:
” Ive been dyin’ for you boy”
, so that it still rhymes?
possible substitutes: ( you build a sentence)
ploy/ toy/ oh boy!/annoy/ tolstoy/dough-boy/ahoy/tomboy/viceroy/killjoy/destroy/decoy
At this point, dear readers, I would like to doff my cap to my Dear Wife, ‘Palice in the Spring-time’ who must be acknowledged for putting me (and many of you by trickle-down) onto much excellent music.
Who is lucky enuf to have had a first date at a Ryan Adams concert? ( she loves her scruffy misread ‘bad-boys’)
other credits would include Lucinda Williams, Interpol, Bonnie Prince Billy, Pernice Bros, hank williams, sigur ros etc etc etc…
she must be the coolest music girl I know…
It seems, boys, whatever she is listening to NOW, we catch on to five years later… (usually im stubborn and dissmissive for 4 years..)

Songs to make blue birds sing and daisies smile:
Jose Gonzalez - “Heartbeats”
Jenny Lewis - “Happy”

Although I do believe that a big lipped French girl whispering over a guitar could make daisies smile even if she was singing about dog poo.

Now I have been listening to Sigur Rós - Agaetis byrjun which is home to “Starálfur”. The song for the jaguar shark scene in “The Life Aquatic”. I love that movie …

Apocolypse Now - The End (The Doors)
not that i have seen it (no i’m not being coy, i haven’t actually seen it!) but I am lead to believe that it is a very effective use of the song

Ok well … “Where is my mind?” - Pixies at the end of “Fight Club”, I know, I know, I go on about it all the time but it’s the first time here.
@Jamie, What is this? Nell - “Tay’n away” (Unknown) … Do you mean “Nell”? That movie with Jodie Foster? You’ve seen that? Of all the films?

Dear Forum Contributors
Quick question on Sonic Youth, who I saw on Rove last night and were fairly impressed.
I like the idea of Sonic youth (ie a band that is uncompomising in their artistic ideals), but am not at all familiar with their work. Should I remain in blissful ignorance, or should I make efforts to address a glaring gap in my musical awareness?

well, fkipthehirstfalf, David will probably have a lot to say on this topic, he was a big fan back in the day. He’s adament that SY are the TRUE influence on a lot of bands rather than Nirvana. And if you listen to them with fresh ears you can hear it…

Unrequested Album Review - The Avalanche (Sufjan Stevens)
Was given a trial copy of this the other day, and after listening to it and enjoying it very much, I thought I’d better buy it and help Sufjan pay his ASCAP fees…
Being outtakes and extras from the Illinoise album, it obviously has a similar feel. Once again, the South Appalachia Parish Brass Band get a good work out (doffing my cap to Liv for that joke there…nice work!). The musical ideas seem to come freely and naturally to this guy, and one of the marks of that is the way that he will use a great musical idea for a song that lasts 1m 20 or so (if I’d had that musical idea, I reckon I’d have wrung a 9min song out of it!). Highlights for me include Adlai (where the woodwind\brass band really come into their own), the acoustic take of Chicago (which I think is better than the album version…mmm, controversial) and the Inaugural Music (the aforementioned 1m 20 song). Look out for the beautiful Satie-esque piano intro on Tornado.
I think that Jesse would really like this album ;)
(and no, Jesse didn’t put me up to this review!!)

Okay, here’s a question for all you guys:
name a female singer who you like who ISN’T good looking.
(do you even know what Sufjan Stevens looks like?)
– Palice in the spring-time
11:47 pm
Well I’m not really into girl singers, so don’t ask me.
Jamie - Mistress is like one of my favorite songs of all time i think. Such a great melody and fantastic harmonies. Yeah I can see the “marching band” marching all over it, but well thats sufjan … I think I’d really like that album though.
Cat Power - At this point I am really annoyed at the time I’ve wasted not listening to her records. She is great. I’ll think of something more eloquent to say when it’s less late.

My favourite-ist high school crush song at the moment =
Sunshine by Handsome Boy Modelling School.
I LOVE IT.
I have it currently on repeat , over and over and over all day in my head.
the three voices together are great, slightly wavery and not quite right. Very earnest. and the talky bits are both sad and funny at the same time. Trés Bien!
do you guys have a high school crush song?

and back to the beyoncé and Mariah debate: B’s dancing in her new film clip is WOAH! and I listened to Emotions by M last night - very daggy song but her singing at the end is WOAH!

Dávid - Aquisition is free(ish) it just nags you to buy (don’t!)
Nina is a touch manly in vocal styling, not really my cup of tea, I still can’t think of any really not that attractive female vocalists. I think maybe the fact that they sing makes them appear more attractive.
What do you mean by “high school crush song”?

Brown Girl in the Ring- Boney M

Kid -The Pretenders
(I always hated this band but have decided that theyre actually preddy cool. dig this song heaps)
Valerie- Zutons
(got this from Adele- yeah!)
Im too sexy- Right Said Fred
( must be the funniest song ever. of course hes too sexy for this song! what a finale… Actually a reviewer tried hard to convince us that these two brothers are actually credible and this song did them an injustice by labling them as a novelty act.
mmm. food for a nano of thought.
Hero worship- B-52s
(excellent screaming and stealth guitar. This rocks. must buy whole album. )
Evening Sun-Strokes
(pleasingly lazy vocals, makes me feel like floating around in a pool- a rich kid. I can hear the Kinks a bit and SY in the guitars a bit.)

I unearthed a deck of flash cards made by Brian Eno which have suggestions for creative approach, called Oblique Strategies. Some are twee, some are useful, i reckon.
I will feed them to youse, little by little until someone says “you suck, Eno!”…

The first two (cassette) albums I ever bought whilst still in primary school (circa. ‘88/’89) were Simply Red’s A New Flame and Gypsy Kings (self titled). Of course, I really wanted Bon Jovi (it looks cool when you write it in gothic letters across your school books) but that was ‘heavy metal’… How tame it sounds these days!! I had to wait ‘til ‘94 to buy their Cross Road album - which is really a Greatest Hits album.

Speaking of highschool crushes. I had a real love of Guns n’ Roses in about year 8. I wrote and drew their logo everywhere.
It culminated in a repoussé peice in metal work of the G’n’R logo, crossed guns and roses and all. It took ages and looked really good, but as soon as I finished it I realised I’d never be able to take it home let alone put it on my wall (G’n’R BAD).
So I tried to sell it … in the end I accepted $2 and a Mars Bar or something.

Do we love songs because of their musical content? Or because of the memories they bring back? Or both?
I was pondering this question because I just got a CD of an old vinyl LP that I had whilst growing up. It was Roy Harris String Quartet No 2. (Roy Harris was an Amercian composer of the 1920s and 30s). I used to listen to the LP a lot when I was about 16 or so, but it got broken somehow, so I hadn’t heard it for ages. Hearing it again has been like being reacquainted with an old friend!
Why do I like it so much? Well, his music is modern enough to be interesting harmonically, but still with recognizable melodies. But is it also because it brings back memories of a certain time? I don’t know, hence my question…
Interested in hearing of your faves - are they faves because of the song itself, or because of the time when you grew to love it?
– skipthefirsthalf
8:48 am
well, skip, I downloaded Robert Palmer’s she makes my day for nostalgic reasons and I thinks it’s great but I think musically it’s not so good? but I couldn’t say for sure cos my ears say “hey, I like this song!” louder than my brain says “hmmm, this song is a bit sucky”.
– Palice in the spring-time
10:10 am
Jamie, I read that as Rolf Harris for about the first half of your post, and based on that large assumption I had an answer for you.
Now that I have re-read I am a bit stuck.
I tend to leave the past alone. In memory, where it is at it’s best.
Take this example, I am presently going to watch the ”Ninja Turtles” films again, all kinds of disappointment and disillusionment await me I’m sure. They can never be as good as what I have made them.
There is a difference between you and I here though, you had good taste in your youth, I (and alice it seems) had pretty crappy taste.
Best left alone I say, lest I dig up NKOTB.
– jesse
12:26 pm
Mmm… Robert Palmer and NKOTB! I don’t think you guys are alone in having the daggy (in some eyes) nostalgia song…
I can’t help but think rather fondly of “I Ran” (A flock of Seagulls) and my Prep/Year 1 alteration to the lyrics:
“I ran…Iran is near Ir-a-a-q”
– skipthefirsthalf
10:24 pm
well, my sentimental LPs are always from my Dads collection (with the notable exception of george benson’s ‘Breezin” — -Thanx Mum)
And signifigantly my two favs are from Beatles- by-them-selves:
John Lennon/ Yoko Ono - Double Fantasy.
This whole album is very seventies; ‘sexy’ brass, wailing guitars (and as A points out, WAILING Yoko), etc.
It is a relationship concept album, each song basically is like a reply to the last. As a wee David, I was struck by the grown-upness (so it seemed) of the relationship issues featured in the songs.
Ringo Starr- Goodnight Vienna.
well, it took ages for me to admit that i like this album- Dad would always tell me that he liked Ringo best of all the Beatles-but now im totally there. its way cool. more 70’s brass&piano- its got rompers like ‘Snookeroo’ and quiet, daggy moments like ‘Husbands & wives’ and the title track which features John on piano and his intro;” ok boys, with GUSTO, with GUSTO!”
its a hoot. apparently ‘the No No Song’ went to #3 on the US charts, while in UK, the whole album peaked merely at #30.
Man, just talking about these albums makes me want to put them on right now — alas, no turntable.

re: Sentimental Faves
I must admit that The Beatles solo stuff was always a bit of a closed book to me…I had thought, in their case, that the “whole was greater than the sum of the parts”. Maybe I have unfairly tarred Ringo with the Wings brush…
– skipthefirsthalf
11:29 pm
Yairs, the Wings “brush” is sticky tar, I know. however, in my typical restorative, polishing-a-poo attitude,
i CAN even think of a good Wings moment:
Dexta and that other De la Cruz guy are Dj-ing after the Avalanches gig (you were there) and some dance track is perfectly dropped…. into…… (crowd anticipation building…) Ba-a-a-a-a-and on the Run!…. beww-beew-be-bing-bing-bing-beng (guitar riffs are difficult to enunciate)
I recall turning to my friends with a dumb, open-mouthed smile,( imagine that) because this was so unexpected but so good.
A fun concert all-round esp the percussionist who made excellent drumstick-play- not by the typical twirling etc, but charades usin’ the sticks, like arrows thru his heart, antlers etc.

Memorable drums
Not really my department, but here goes:
Night and Fog - Mercury Rev
Gorgeously melodic song given a completely different character with some awkward, insistent rolls
Chicago - Sufjan Stevens (the second version on the avalanche)
It’s got these wonderfully controlled crescendo drum rolls that add so much to that version
Mama’s Gun - Erykah Badu
Great drums right through - beautiful production, inventive right through
PS Incidentally, also loving Unwind - Sonic Youth (Washing Machine)

OKAY, — — Bom bom bap, Batta-bom bap!
as Skipper would say, put your techno hat on ( ie be attentive to the subtle shifts amongst the repetition) — but this time for a proto-funk tune.
The Funky Drummer- James Brown.
This track has been sampled umpty-dum million times by rappers, most notably Run DMC, back-in-tha-day.
So, go and get your copy and put it on right now.
Press Play.
Its w-a-a-a-y tight.
Not much actually happens, its very repetitive isnt it… but good, no? like something that you dont want to end- and hey, its not going to end for ages…
“still good” says the Godfather.
Listen to the drumming. THE DRUMMING. its shufffling along, smacking, teasing out the beats, hissing little snare rolls here and there, very buttoned-down
then,
“fellas, i wanna give the drummer some of this funky soul we got here…
“You dont have to do no solo-ing brother, just keep what you got — coz its a mutha….”
and on the eventual signal, the drummer opens up with the plain ol’ bom bom bap , batta-bom bap ( is that called a Fat Back? please advise)
Sho’ Nuf !!

Today i was listening to the Gorillaz, on an iPod, and then, i swear, all of a sudden, the background turned into a solid wall of pure purple, and I was no more than an inky silhouette, roller-skating around- totally blacked out -except for the white of my smile and those white iPod wires.

On the topic of drumming ~ Radiohead’s OK computer has some quite incredible drumming, most notably “Airbag”. I’ve always been impressed by Elliott Smith’s drumming, not brilliant but “right”.
Also I’ve been playing Nick Drakes “5 leaves left”. It is really pretty and sad at the same time.

My Brush With Drum Lessons.
Dad’s mate Ron is a drummer in some band called ‘Natural Selection’ or sumthin’.
He is also a bit of a farmer.
I happened to have 4 chickens at the time, which I hand raised on UncleToby’s müsli, so you can imagine they were pretty stealthy looking birds. Ron, or uncle Ron as he is often called, said he would give me some drum lessons in return for the birds.
He took them.
Many months later, after being pestered, he showed up and had a bit of a jazzy tap on my toy kit and went to have a cigar with Dad. end of lesson.
Oh, and he showed me a paradiddle LLRL RRLR- no actually that was Duncan.

Generic music lessons in high school which involved 1 week of drums. I got 9 1/2 out of 10. The only way to get a perfect 10 was to get 1/2 a point for “attitude” which I clearly lacked.
I saw that as a dismal failure and refused to play the drums in the upcoming school concert, thereby ending my drumming career forever.

“well its the colours and the kids that keep me alive because the music is boring me to death….”
youve all gone quiet.
heres one for the fans; thurston moore meets kim gordon:
“I decided to play the guitar as if I existed in a pure state of mind and could attack it with flowing mindful sensitive energy/expression. I knew nothing of jazz, free-jazz, or any studied musical concept of improvisation. I had a ratty skinny-lapel suit jacket (all East Village poor-boy punk rockers had one) and no job. I jammed with this girl Miranda who asked me after our first session, “Do you always play like that?” I wasn’t sure. It was new to me. She said her best friend was this beautiful artist named Kim. They played music together in a group called CKM which was the two of them and the drummer Christine Hahn from Glenn Branca’s trio The Static. I was duly impressed and even more exciting was that they were trying to get Nina Canal from UT to play with them. Kim wore glasses with flip-up shade and had an Australian sheepdog named Egan. She had an off-center ponytail and wore a blue and white striped shirt and pants outfit. She had beautiful eyes and the most beautiful smile and was very intelligent and seemed to have a sensitive/spiritual intellect. She seemed to really like me.
I definately liked her but was scared as always to make a move. I was afraid to kiss her. We walked around a couple of times. One night it got late and we were eating at Leshko’s and I think she wanted me to ask her over. I only lived up the street. So we parted. She would take the subway staying at gallery owner Anina Nosei’s place. Before she split she actually touched my arm (!) and said “See you later.” She moved into a raw railway apartment on Eldridge Street below Grand Street. The artist Dan
Graham lived upstairs and had aquired the place for her. She invited me over one evening and I played this beat up guitar she had. I knew the guitar because it belonged to an associate of the Coachmen gang who left it at Jenny Holzer’s loft where Kim had stayed and somehow it was passed on to her. All she had was the guitar and a foam rubber cushion for sleeping. That night was the first time we kissed.

A very limited knowledge of Jazz I have, but as far as I can see, Coltrane seems to be fairly consistent in his style. Great pianist McCoy Tyner who he played with; melodic, expressive playing of the highest quality. His work with Johnny Hartman is also well worth listening to.
Kind of Blue is the obvious recommendation for an intro to Miles Davis. Just beautiful right through. Miles Davis seemed to try a heap of different styles (Spanish classical stuff, later career Jazz fusion (reminiscent of Howard Moon!)). I’d stick to the early stuff myself.

I thought it was agreed to never mention the denim bar and it’s alleged patrons again!

Ah no your wrong there … we agreed never to mention the “Denim LOUNGE” … the denim bar is fine …
You should ask Steve about Frank Zappa, me I don’t really like him at all, a bit too flippant.

4:46 pm
why ask steve when he can just ask Kieran?
never ask a dad about Frank Zappa

Esmé: I’m interested in your thoughts on Frank Zappa
Jesse: I see where you are coming from.
A Dad’s place in society is to reproduce more social comments and an oberservations by means of their prodigy
to all dads of the world where would we be without you?

I can’t be sure, but I think Esme might say the following (to be read in a high pitch baby voice):
“I’m glad my parents were sensible people and called me a nice name like Esme. If they had been slightly loopo like Frank Zappa, I might have been called Dweezil or Moonshine!”
(NB I think they are Frank’s children’s names!!)

I dare say that our children will be paying out on our Beck albums…
(read with a sarcastic tone: )
“…huh, yeah, nice one Dad- like all ‘im Beck, the deconsructivist/neo-folk/trash-blues/prince-accolite/cyborg-grandma/ghost town guy…’ ..so cynical..”

I wish I had something meaningful to say - but actually this is just a dash for glory to be the poster of the 150th comment on this fine blog.

Got to thinking about locations in songs (being a mapping guy an’ all) when I saw a picture of 44th and Broadway on TV today. A few came to mind:
* Cnr W 44 and Broadway (Ryan Adams - Tonight)
* Glebe Point Bridge (You Am I - Purple Sneakers)
I like locations in songs - Any others? Like / dislike?

yay! Jamie’s back!
Paul Kelly has a particular perchant for name dropping locations in his songs, with varying degrees of success, in my opinion.

There’s no such place- Augie march (?) lol

I must be daft - I forgot Sufjan Stevens - he’s done two albums full of them!
I was thinking further about it, I think the town names don’t quite have the same effect as when you have a specific location that you think “I’ve been there on that spot” or at least I could go there…

I love spots!

( did anyone notice? — it seems everyone is bored by questions of a musical nature… :-&
Road- Nick Drake
I do love this track- the guitar is enough on its own. Hammer-
-ons in good measure.
strings tuned to: (my guess…) D-F-$-&-%-D
He was 23 when he made it and this was to be his last album.
This brings up a topic of interest- how old Artists were when they did stuff. It puts it in context. what was I doing at 23?
Drake got a record deal at 20 — but each of his 3 albums only sold 5,000
copies each, at the time….
sigh.
Johnathan Richman & the modern lovers- Egyptian Reggae
ahh, yeah. Its the coolest. J was 26.
Magic America- Blur
an oldie- but a goodie, revisited
Actually, theyve written a couple of songs about America….
mmmm.
Damon was 26

I noticed …
I have been listening to a bit of Nick Drake also of late.
Jamie did I give you “5 leaves left”? What did you think of it? also did i get your opinion on “the greatest”? I know alice wants to hear nothing about Cat Power for a good while … but well, she can close her eyes.
I thought Drake didn’t really do much for me, but of late I enjoy it more and more.
Also, I have a drum kit now! Stay tuned for more on that!

It is good to have the clean-window mix back!
It’s interesting what you say about the Nick Drake…I always have loved River Man, but the other songs didn’t grab me at first. I think it was the very correct, mannered way of singing that I found a bit disconcerting…but the other songs have been growing on me, as has been your experience, Jesse. The guitar work is very intricate and interesting, and I think that it has been fitting a mood that I have been searching for lately.
I’ve only had one listen to the Cat Power The Greatest, so I’ll have to have some more listens before I comment on that one. Not for me to make a pre-emptive early call on things … ;)

re; cat Power,
I like ‘can we’ — - all the more so because it is sort of daggy, but somehow stylish in the process….
(’ why yes, be my guest’)
Saxa-brassa-phones here and there.. — — I was thinking that brass was due for a comeback — - esp SAX, mainly cuz its so 80s cheesy — making it an irresistable subject for brainy young minstrels who want to make something transcendant by using the old silk-purse-from-a-
sows- ear trick… ( dig me?)
Brass is apparently the only thing his purple majesty (Prince)
cant play. ( i would add Rapping to that as well- what a stinker!)
but, in typical Compensatory fashion ( high heels, e
