Pause, OK, wait! Pause again! Harakiri
I hope this is a the first in a series of homages to great movie stills. Some of these stand so well on their own, just print them out and stick them on your wall.
I may have been a bit behind on this one, but I saw this for the first time only fairly recently. All I could think while watching it was “Oh that’s great, oh that’s better!”, so now I have to pare back the fifty or so screen shots I took back to a key two or three.
Harakiri is a 1962 film by Masaki Kobayashi and is the story of a disgraced samurai hoping to end his life honorably by perform ritual suicide, before he does so he proceeds to tell the story of his life.

I guess the fact that this is black and white is at play, I think you tend to notice shapes and contrasts more. But the placement of objects, space in the frame and lighting is genius.
Grab it and watch it if you can, but if you aren’t as slow as me and have already seen it, tell me what you thought.

Finally
I am notoriously lax when it comes to updating this site, I just looked and it was October when I last posted … oh dear. Anyway, I’ve been working on something, so I’ll say that’s why it’s been so long.
A long time ago I buried the music link on this site with the intention of making a new one for my musical endeavors. And it’s finally here. So please have a look and let me know what you think.

外国人
Sitting in a high rise apartment in Tokyo, it’s pretty late at night. I’ve uploaded some photos of the trip so far. We’ve seen a castle, a lot of gardens and getting ready to get some modern Tokyo craziness.
Click the picture to see the other photos.
(I’ve broken the galleries here, you might have noticed, they are working but are just a bit weird in places. So yeah, I’ll get right on that.)

I am a fan
From “Bottle Rocket” to “The Life Aquatic” something about the way Wes Anderson puts a movie together is … I want to say magical, but I’m afraid that might sound pretentious … but then I did say it … so yeah, magical.

A house in the country
Charles, David and I all trekked up to the country on the weekend. We took our families and a lot of musical equipment.

Thankfully we have something to show for it, other than a rested feeling at the beginning of the week (not that that isn’t worthwhile in itself).

It’s about eight and a half minutes long, but I think it’s worth it.
